Nearby Islands

Leaving Grenada, the nearby islands of Carriacou and Petite are a comfortable day’s sail under favourable conditions.within a days sail from Grenada with the right conditions. The distance from Grenada to Carriacou is approximately 35 nautical miles.

The prevailing trade winds blow consistently from the east to northeast, creating a broad reach or beam reach as sailors navigate northward. The passage crosses the open waters of the Grenada Channel, which occasionally produces challenging seas, especially during periods of strong winds and ocean swells.

Carriacou: The Island of Reefs

Carriacou, the largest of the two neighbouring islands, earned the name “the land of reefs” due to its extensive coral reefs which attract snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. The island’s charm comes from its unspoiled beaches, welcoming people, and centuries-old traditional boat-building heritage.

Tyrell Bay

The most popular anchorage for arriving yachts is Tyrell Bay, located on the island’s southwest coast. The bay provides excellent protection from the trade winds. It also serves as a designated port of entry, allowing sailors to clear customs and immigration with ease. The process is straightforward, with customs offices located near the dock.

Tyrell Bay has a range of facilities, including:

Marinas and Repair Services – Several boatyards provide haul-out and maintenance services.

Provisioning – Small supermarkets and local markets offer fresh produce, seafood, and essential supplies.

Restaurants and Bars—Seaside restaurants serve delicious Caribbean cuisine, including fresh lobster, conch, and traditional oil down.

Water Sports and Diving – Nearby reefs and wreck sites create excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities.

Hillsborough Grenada

Hillsborough

Hillsborough, the main town of Carriacou, lies a short sail or taxi ride from Tyrell Bay. The town maintains a slow-paced, authentic Caribbean atmosphere, featuring colourful wooden buildings, friendly locals, and a handful of shops, banks, and restaurants.

Visitors can enjoy:

Paradise Beach – A stunning stretch of white sand offering clear waters and local beach bars.

The Carriacou Museum – A small yet fascinating museum showcasing the island’s history, including its boat-building traditions and African heritage.

Traditional Boat-Building – Carriacou is famous for its handcrafted wooden sloops, a legacy of Scottish shipbuilding techniques passed down through generations.

Neighbouring Islands

Sandy Island

A short distance from Hillsborough lies Sandy Island. This breathtaking strip of white sand is surrounded by crystal clear, turquoise waters. This uninhabited islet remains a favourite among sailors seeking a peaceful retreat. The waters surrounding Sandy Island support abundant marine life, making it an excellent snorkelling spot. The anchorage here provides good holding, but shifting winds require careful attention to weather conditions.

Sailing to Petite Martinique

A mere three miles east of Carriacou, Petite Martinique is the smallest of Grenada’s inhabited islands. This tiny island, measuring just over one square mile, supports a close-knit community focused on fishing and boat-building.

The passage from Carriacou to Petite Martinique remains short and straightforward, with calm waters and gentle breezes allowing for a leisurely sail. As sailors approach the island, they encounter a stunning landscape of lush green hills and colourful fishing boats lining the shore.

Fishing Carribean

Anchoring at Petite Martinique

The best anchorage sits on the island’s western side, near the main village. The waters here remain relatively shallow, providing good holding for anchoring. Although Petite Martinique lacks the extensive yachting facilities found in Carriacou, the island’s charm and welcoming atmosphere create an unforgettable experience.

Petite Martinique remains largely untouched by mass tourism, creating a perfect destination for those seeking an authentic Caribbean experience. The island’s economy depends on fishing; visitors often purchase fresh seafood directly from the boats.

Beyond Carriacou and Petite Martinique

For sailors with more time, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are gateways to the Grenadines and St Vincent. Union Island, Tobago Cays, and Mayreau lie a short sail away.

Union Island – Known for its striking peaks and vibrant Clifton Harbour, this island provides additional provisioning and immigration services.

Tobago Cays – A marine park famous for its crystal-clear waters, sea turtles, and protected coral reefs.

Mayreau – A small, quiet island featuring a spectacular beach at Salt Whistle Bay.
